Sniffing is one of the most natural behaviours a dog has. It’s how they make sense of the world, far more than with their eyes or ears. So when we give dogs structured opportunities to use their nose, we’re not just keeping them busy. We’re tapping into something deeply instinctual and incredibly rewarding.
That’s where scentwork comes in.

What Is Scentwork?
Scentwork (sometimes called nosework) is a training activity where dogs learn to find and indicate specific scents. It’s based on the same principles used with working detection dogs but adapted for everyday pet dogs. No special equipment or prior training experience is needed.
Why Scentwork Is Worth Doing
Scentwork isn’t about obedience or control. It’s about focus, independence, and allowing your dog to think. Some of the main benefits include:
Mental stimulation: Scentwork gives your dog’s brain a proper workout. For many dogs, especially those with high energy, working backgrounds, or busy minds - this is just as important as physical exercise.
Confidence building: Nervous or reactive dogs often thrive when they’re given a clear task in a low-pressure setting. The search helps them focus on something productive and rewarding.
Outlet for natural behaviour: Dogs are meant to use their noses. Providing an appropriate outlet can reduce frustration and help prevent unwanted behaviours at home and on walks.
Accessible to all dogs: Young or old, fast or slow, confident or cautious. Every dog can benefit from scentwork. It’s inclusive, adaptable, and fun.
Not Sure Where to Start?
We’re running an Introduction to Scentwork session for anyone curious to give it a go. It’s relaxed, supportive, and a great way to learn the foundations in a fun, hands-on setting with your dog.
Upcoming Intro Workshop -
Location: Portgordon Village Hall
4th October 1pm
No previous training needed, just a dog, a nose, and a willingness to have a go!
After the intro, you’ll have the option to join our weekly scentwork classes, held locally in Moray, where we build your dog’s skills at their own pace and enjoy plenty of sniff-filled fun along the way.
Final Thoughts
Scentwork is more than just a fun trick. It’s a powerful form of enrichment that taps into your dog’s natural instincts, builds calm focus, and helps meet their emotional and mental needs.
For pet dogs, especially those living in a world where most of their choices are made for them scentwork offers a bit of freedom. It lets them take the lead, use their brain, and be successful on their own terms.
If you're based in Elgin, Buckie, or the wider Moray area and looking for a new way to connect with your dog, one that doesn’t rely on constant commands or high-energy play, scentwork might be exactly what you’re looking for.
Spaces are limited, so get in touch to book your spot on the intro session and join our growing scentwork community in the north of Scotland.
